Steeped in tradition and with a rich history, the Pilgrimage ends at Llandaff Cathedral - the home of the shrine of St Teilo, the most important pilgrimage site in Wales during the 5th and 6th centuries. However, by the 15th century the most popular pilgrim site in the area was the statue of the Virgin and Child, close to the nearby Holy Well at Penrhys - it was a destination to give thanks and seek healing.
Such was its popularity, the reformers, under the orders of Thomas Cromwell removed the statue; it was taken to London and was burnt along with other Statues of Our Lady. The statue that now stand on the site of the former Cistercian Chapel was installed in 1953 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff.
The path, while still traversable, was somewhat challenging until it was reopened after much hard work by both Cardiff & RCT council, and many, many volunteers in 2020.
Day One - Saturday 10th October, Penrhys - Llantrisant, approx 10.5 miles.
We'll be starting at the top of Penrhys Mountain in the Rhondda, and heading South through Dinas and Trebanog, then Tonyrefail, walking through fields, up and down hills and taking in some spectacular views, before reaching some much needed refreshment at The Guildhall in Llantrisant.
Day Two - Sunday 11th October, Llantrisant - Llandaff, approx 10.5 miles.
Beginning where we left off at The Guildhall in Llantrisant, we'll dip down towards Cross Inn and across to Groesfaen before heading towards Creigiau through some beautiful meadowlands, before the scenery starts to become a little more urban as we reach Radyr, before finally reaching Llandaff cathedral.
A good level of fitness is required, and sturdy, waterproof footwear and clothing is essential. You must bring provisions (snacks and adequate water) as there are no facilities en route.
We will be providing transport from Llantrisant at 9:15am on Saturday morning for people to leave their cars there, if you do not have a car, please message us directly and we will identify a car share option with another walker(s). We will then begin the walk at 10am prompt from Penrhys.
On Sunday morning we will provide transport from Llandaff cathedral at 9am back to the start point in Llantrisant - again please message us to identify lift shares if you do not have access to a car. We will then begin the walk at 10am prompt from The Guildhall in Llantrisant.
The 124 bus runs to Cardiff via Llantrisant from the Rhondda if you prefer to make your own way there.
The participation fee helps cover transport, event organisation, refreshments, and the costs associated with delivering the pilgrimage experience.
